Ring Boxing Club Exterior

I’m trying to get back to work on some stuff for The Ring Boxing Club. On major thing that needs some work is the front of the building. The main issue is that they’re in a shared building, and it looks like it. We’re trying to take over the front of the building and really make it feel like it’s theirs.

Here’s what it currently looks like and below is what I’d like to do with it. I’m not sure the landlord will approve, but we’ll never know unless we try.

The idea is that the bottom logo is for the pedestrians and the top one is for drivers and people across the street.

Oh, by the way… I finally saw “Million Dollar Baby”. What was all the hype about? I don’t know if I’d go so far as to say it sucked but I would never say it was great. I’d give it a solid OK.

Mindseye/Agencourt

I finished up the project for Mindseye today. I was working on a website for a company called Agencourt. They’re a fancy lab that does fancy DNA tests for fancy clients.

You can check out the staging version of it here:

I’ll update this with a link to the final when it goes live.

The people over at Mindseye are very cool and it was good to work with them. Hopefully they’ll have some more work for me in the future. They seemed very happy with the results.

As I mentioned before I had to write a decent amount of code for this site. It was my first time working with this much externally loading video, or this much externally loading content in general. Almost everything is pulled in dynamically.

I think I’ll have some time next week to pull out chunks of code I wrote. I’ll post the FLA’s here for you all to use and edit.

Rubber Johnny from Chris Cunningham

You can get some info on Rubber Johnny here.

Or check out part of it here

Here’s the proof

The home page and a sub page for my redesign of the U.S. Catholic website.

T-Shirt

Here’s a design I’ve been playing around with for a new t-shirt. I’m going to work on refining it a bit. Right now it’s pretty rough, I’d like to see what it would look like if it were smoother so I’m going to trace it in Illustrator.

I really like it but I don’t know if this will be the final. I’m going to try a few variations on the theme in addition to the vector version and I’ll post them here for comments.

Moving?

Nikole and I are thinking of renting out our house and getting a place in the city. Preferably in Boston or Cambridge. If anyone is interested in renting or has a nice place to rent, let me know.

I’ll post some pictures of our house early this week.

Work Update

I’ve taken the job with Irrational Games, who are in need of a new website, as an Interface Designer. I’ll be working there 20 hours a week for most of the summer. I really wanted to be able to do some freelance work and enjoy the weather this year. I’ll be there fulltime in mid-September, although it’s going to be really hard going back to work. I’m really enjoying my current arrangement.

What I think I’m most looking forward to about working at Irrational is the challenge, I really don’t know much about this industry. A big part of why I took the job was the huge promise of learning, and the fact that I now have a great excuse to play video games.

Last week I had a to quickly familiarize myself with the concept and style of the game, BioShock, as well as the work that has already been done on it, and it looks amazing. I’m thrilled to be a part of this project and this team.

***

On the freelance front, I’m working on a project for Mindseye that’s required that I write some useful and reusable code. I’ve written code for a dynamic video player, photo gallery, drop-down menu system and a text field with scroll bar. I’ll post the files when I’ve polished them up a bit more.

I’m also working some comps for the U.S. Catholics magazine website. I never thought I’d be working on something like this and I half took the job just to be able to say I did it. It’s a little weird but not as weird as I thought it would be. I’ll post some first rounds comps by Tuesday.

I’ll be starting a project for a company called Beverage Events this week. The idea is that you pay them to cater the alcohol for your party. They have theme bars and professional bartenders and everything else you might need. It sounds a bit cheesy to me, but maybe it’s just because I don’t drink. I’ll post some more info on that when it’s a bit more developed. I’m still in the concept phase.

And as always I’m working on various things over at The Ring Boxing Club. They really want to get the place in shape over the summer in time for the new school year.

I guess my three freelance projects are really a stretch for me. I don’t believe in god, I don’t drink and I don’t workout. Maybe next I’ll work on a site for gay singles.

Style Change

I was getting a bit sick of seeing the same style on other blogs so I decided to change it up a bit. It’s nothing great but it’s better than what I had before.

iTunes Tip (for Windows)

I like the “mini” version of the iTunes player but no matter where I put it I feel like it always gets in the way… I stumbled upon this option by mistake but now I can’t live without it.

All you have to do is right click on any free space on your taskbar go to the “toolbars” menu and select “iTunes”. I think you have to do it while iTunes is running, but maybe not. Also, I’m running iTunes 4.8 but it may work in other versions.

From now on (unless you unselect this option) whenever you minimize iTunes you’ll get a mini player in your taskbar!

Updates

I’ve been away from popstick now for about 2 weeks and it feels great. I really miss everyone but I don’t miss the place. I’m really hoping to get together with my friends more. I was planning on having a party on the 18th of Jun, but a few key people couldn’t make it so I’m going to postpone it. I’ll let everyone know when it will be. Hopefully we’ll have some good weather and we can hang out outside barbeque, listen to music and talk. Maybe Dave Alpert and Neil will perform for us.

I’m hoping to work from home for most of the summer but I have a couple full time job opportunities that may come through soon. I already have a job offer from Mindseye (www.mindseye.com) and I’m waiting to hear from Irrational Games (www.irrationalgames.com). Mindseye is a pretty cool company in the South End, which does mostly websites. I’ve been offered a mostly Flash, some HTML web designer role. Irrational Games is a video game company and I’ve been working with them for the past two months on an Interface Design project.

I finally finish the Dave Alpert’s CD design. He should be picking them up this week. I’ll post some photos of the final product when I get my hands on a copy.

I’ll try to post something every few days.
