I’m going to be taking a trip to Canberra, AU some time around October. My time at Irrational Games is going to be split 50/50 between the Boston office and the office in Australia so they’re flying me down to meet the team. I’ll probably be there for about 4 weeks.
o
I hear Canberra isn’t exactly the most “happening” part of Australia but it’s only about 2 hours by car to Sydney so I’ll prbably make a least one trip over.
But as Steven said, worst case I’ll have the really long plane ride to look forward to.

I’m working on a web site for Mary Beth’s photography portfolio. If anyone has any nice photography sites (I’m more interested in seeing the way navigation and layout is handled) then please pass them along.
I’d also love to hear some suggestions for cool features. I’m planning on implementing lightbox sharing. Meaning, you can go through the site, choose some photos you like and then email that package to someone. Another idea is to do eCards or slide shows that a user could customize.
As usual, I’ll post some comps here when the site is close.

I’ve been playing around a bit with saving information from flash to the server. I basically wanted to create a database without have to actually go through the hassle of creating a database.
I found that the easiest, but still fairly robust, option was to have Flash call a PHP page that would generate an XML file on the server. Flash now plays very nice with XML so it works great.
This is all still very new territory for me so I don’t think think I’m qualified to provide a tutorial of any kind but if anyone’s interested let me know and I’d be more than happy to share my files with you.
This weekend I also figured out how to pass a variable to an SWF that is embedded in an HTML page through the URL. If the Flash movie is not embedded you can just pass the variable like: http://www.mysite.com/myMovie.swf?var1=value
You just need a variable of the same name in Flash, in this case “var1″.
However… when the swf is embedded it’s a bit trickier. The HTML needs to pass the var to Flash, not the URL. So the way I’m doing it is by sending the var to a PHP page which plugs in the desired value in the HTML page.

Here are the comps for another site I did for Itero. Itero is the company I’ve been doing these Catholic sites for. I’m hoping to do more work for them. I really enjoy being able to just come up with the layout and not have to worry about the implemtation of it.
This is the most “spiritual” of all their sites so I had to resort to some stock photography which I normally wouldn’t have used. I think it’s a good fit for the audience.

That’s low… although I noticed that some other designs that I thought would do very well ended up scoring in the low 3’s. I guess the threadless kids are a tough crowd. I haven’t heard anything about the winners yet, although with that score what little hope I had before is gone.
But not all is lost. I’m still planning on printing the shirt myself.

Here’s a link to my submission for the threadless t-shirt competition. The more votes I get the better, so get over there and start voting!

Here’s the logo I’ve been working on for the site. I wanted to go with kind of a marker on paper look but I still wanted to keep it clean.
I’m probably going to make a few more tweaks to it but hopefully a new site with a new logo will be up within a month or two.
But you won’t hear me complain if I’m too busy with freelance work to get the site done.

Here’s the comp for the home page I did for the Claretians website. I had to go with a very compartmentalized design, which I’m not a big fan of, in order to match some of their existing sites but all in all I think it looks pretty good.
Check out those heavenly clouds in the header!
By the way… I’ve already been asked to work on another one. I’ll post that some time next week.

Apparently the Catholics were so happy with my work that they’ve come back for more. I’ve been asked to come up with a design for the parent portal site for the Claretians.
I’ll post some screenshots when I’m done.

I’m trying to get back to work on some stuff for The Ring Boxing Club. On major thing that needs some work is the front of the building. The main issue is that they’re in a shared building, and it looks like it. We’re trying to take over the front of the building and really make it feel like it’s theirs.
Here’s what it currently looks like and below is what I’d like to do with it. I’m not sure the landlord will approve, but we’ll never know unless we try.

The idea is that the bottom logo is for the pedestrians and the top one is for drivers and people across the street.
Oh, by the way… I finally saw “Million Dollar Baby”. What was all the hype about? I don’t know if I’d go so far as to say it sucked but I would never say it was great. I’d give it a solid OK.
